Here is a bowl I turned on my birthday, January 28, but
the year was 2010! This bowl has some bark remaing on the side and it has a nice contrast of dark heartwood and white like
sapwood. There is also a knotty spot on the inside bottom area. The finish is pure tung oil, followed by numerous
sprayings of spar urethane. Afterward, I sand the finish with steelwool and polish it with a damp cloth. No wax
has been added. The dimensions of this bowl are: 7.75" diameter by 4.75" height. The finish is extremely smooth.

I turned this in March of 2010 and was picturing wine
decanters in my mind. However, instead of filling with wine, I was thinking more in the line of dried flowers!
The drilled out opening into the top of the vase is approximated 1" diameter and has a depth of 4.4" from the top of the vase.
This piece of walnut has both sapwood and heart wood so the contrast is unique and the position of the two colors are amplified
by their change in diameter within the vase. The finish is pure tung oil. I have applied many coats of oil, each
time resanding the surface so that the finish is extremely smooth. There is a groove at the bottom of the vase.

Here is a bowl that is both artistic and functional. It
is well suited for dried flowers and in a pinch could be used for your favorite chilled champagne bottle. Crafted in early
2007, this was one of my first artistic piece using the all heartwood walnut. It is somewhat heavy, so don't worry about that
chilled bottle of wine tipping over! The dimensions are 8" diameter by 7.5" height. Finished with tung oil
and then sprayed with numerous coats of spar urethane.

Here is a natural edge bowl without the bark. I
turned this on January 16, '10 and it has a nice blend of light and dark wood. The bowl was sanded to an extremely smooth
finish using various grits of sandpaper, finishing it with 1200 grit. The inside is especially smooth and near perfect. The
dimensions are 7.1" diameter by 5.25" height. The finish is with 100% pure Tung oil.

Here is a more interesting piece of crafted wood.
I term it a vase because its diameter,6.5" is the same as it height. I started turning this on February 3, '10 and it is all
dried, sanded, oiled, sprayed and ready for use. The vase is somewhat distorted on the top diameter and it has some
bark remaining on part of one side. This type crafted item is turned by what is called 'end grain' work. It is
much more difficult to take away the wood fibers from their 'ends's that are approached vertically. In a bowl, the grain/fibers
are horizontal giving the bowl strength against breakage. This vase was finished with pure tung oil followed by numerous
sprayings of spar urethane. It was then sanded again and polished with a damp cloth. No waxes have been applied, nor
will it need any later on.

This is definitely a unique item. Again,
I call it a vase because of its dimensions; 4.9" diameter by 5.5" height. This is an end grain effort and the wood revealed
itself with all of these brown/walnut color spots on the surface. As mentioned above end grain work is much more difficult
but as you can see the results can be quite stunning! I first started on this on January 7, '10 and often I have to
stop after a couple of hours because the difficulty of 'turning out the wood material' transfers to my wrists which end
up hurting. The steel tool kind of bounces back when you try to make progress. Anyway, that is what it feels
like to me. The finish is pure tung oil followed by numerous spraying of spar urethane, then I sand it again and polish
with a damp cloth.
