Cherry Burl Bowl, No. c621
In the fall of 2009, I obtained a huge trunk section of a cherry burl.  The diameter was approximately 31".  I knew I could make many burl bowls from this although at the time I wasn't sure how I would cut it up into usable pieces.  Since the burl grows on the outside surface of the trunk, the large knobs were easy to remove.  However once this was done I had to recognize that some of this trunk was normal tree growth and that there would be a typical grain pattern with annual rings.  One  of the distinct characteristics of cherry burl is that it has a unpleasant odor, which dissipates during drying and that when dried the weight of the bowl is very light. So, on November 30, 2010 I turned this large slice of burl and following drying found that it was very light but that it had some annual growth rings in it.  To me it was burl because of the offensive odor.
This bowl is 14.5" diameter by 4" height, finished first with tung oil, then sprayed with numerous coats of spar urethane, polished and is now available as a great decorative piece as well as a functional bowl for various items.

Cherry Burl Wood Bowl, No. c625
I turned this on March 19, '11 from a 98 year old tree. I mention this because I was wondering whether the grain/characteristics would be differrent from younger trees. Couldn't detect any significant differences.  But I will mention that I turned some cherry from New Hamshire and it was very different from the cherry here in the NYC area.  I turned this differently in that I wanted the sap wood to show on the top edge.  The result is different than other bowls, but it also developed a crack on its side.  Some people think this adds character to the bowl.  The dimensions are 10" diameter by 5"height.  The finish is pure Tung Oil followed by numerous sprayings of spar urethane.  The feel is extremely smooth.  Recently I have placed the cherry bowls near the sunlight so that the darker red develops sooner.

Cherry Wood Bowl, No. c632
This is a beautiful cherry bowl.  I exposed the dry bowl to the spring sun and it has developed a deep red color. I first turned this on
September 12, '10.  This bowl has a natural crack that runs along the bottom and in the center there is a small opening to the bottom.  Don't add water to the bowl unless you are sprinking water on a plant!  The crack proceeds up the side and opens up on the top edge. Otherwise this bowl is pretty traditional. The finish is pure tung oil followed by spraying with spar  urethane. It is exremely smooth to the touch.  The dimensions are 11.25" diameter by 3.25" height.

Cherry Burl Wood Bowl, No. c635
I turned this on November 24, '10 from the huge cherry burl trunk that I have mentioned above.  This burl bowl, like most other cherry burls is light in weight for its size.  This is due to the fact that there isn't any annual growth ring so there isn't any definitive structure to this material. Much of it has bark and other types of material  within it. Again, after drying, sanding and rubbing with Tung Oil, I placed it in the sun so that the darker red will develop more rapidly. The finish is pure Tung Oil, followed by spraying with spar urethane to provide a durable impermeable surface that is ready to accept whatever you may wish to place on it.  The dimensions are 13.75" diameter by 4.18" height.

Cherry Wood Bowl, No. c672
Here is a nice traditional bowl, good for salads, fruit, snacks or just to sit on a table.  I turned this on July 15, '11 , so by the time it dried, the sun was not really available for the develpment of the nice dark red color.  And since I store my bowls wrapped in boxes, it hasn't really seen the light of day! It's pretty lame but will improve considerably.  Many people ask me whether I can finish the bowls more 'natural'.  Well, here is one with just pure Tung oil on it.  I rub it on numerous times, then after it has cured/dried , I  sand it with wet and dry sandpaper to make it as smooth as possible.  It's not as smooth asbowls with marine spar finish but it is more natural.  The dimensions are 10.75" diameter by 4.25" height.  There is some slight decay in the sapwood light color) that makes it feel different then the heartwood.

Cherry Wood Bowl No. c 559

Here is another excellent pedestal base cherry bowl.  Use it functionally with items in it or as a centerpiece for a table. First turned on July 9, '10, I just finished this and am offering it first online.  The bowl has a flat edge of 1.2" in width, the pedestal base is 4.2" in diameter while the diameter 12.75" and the height is 3.5". The finish is pure tung oil and spar urethane. The cherry wood will darken over time.  Contrary to the one picture of the bowl, it sits perfectly level, the error due to the photographer/wood turner himself.  Sorry about that.

Cherry Wood Bowl, No. c 626
This is not from the 98 yr old cherry tree as above but....  It is a unique beauty.  This bowl has a 1" flat top edge with a beautiful erosion on one section of the edge.  Definitely nice is the knot hole that goes completly thru the bowl to the base that it sits on.  Now some of you may ask, 'who wants a bowl with a hole in it'?  Well, having sold nearly 500 bowls, I can tell you that many people gravitate to this type of bowl because it is a one of a kind produced by nature for your pleasure and enjoyment.  This bowl was first turned on October 22, '10 and is pretty thick on its sides but not too heavy.  It's dimensions are 14.5" diameter by 3.25" height. The deep red color of cherry has been allowed to develop after sanding and oiling so it has this wonderful array of dark lines near the erosion area and of course the knot is easily viewed. The final finishing involved many sprayings of marine spar urethane to give it that much needed protection.  It is extremely smooth to the touch. Another excellent bowl for decoration
