Pignut Hickory Bowl, No. h629
This is the 2nd bowl that I have made from this most difficult to turn wood. It is so hard and consequently heavy.  I turned this one on December 15, '10 and as you can see it is different in many ways.  This bowl is 15.5" in diameter and a bit more than 4.25" in height. It is finished with tung oil and numerous sprayings of spar urethane and has a very smooth surface. The crack is an old one with a dark color inside it.  The shape, that was due to me and the wood together.  It is heavy but unique.  Good for many uses and also conversation.

Shagbark Hickory Bowl, No. h175
This bowl is from the same tree described above. It was first crafted on November 2,'07. There is not any distortion to this bowl. This bowl does not have any blackend areas. There is not a base/foot to this bowl, so the bottom diameter(8.25") sits completly on the surface. The finish is pure Tung Oil followed by spraying of numerous coats of a clear, glossy lacquer, followed by sanding to an ultra smooth finish. The dimensions are: 13.5" diameter x 4" height.

Pignut Hickory Bowl, No. ph694
Well, I've mentioned that hickory wood is quite hard.  Pignut may be even harder.  It is not my favorite to turn because of the difficulty of cutting it with a chainsaw, bandsaw and lathe tools.  So, from the one piece of Pignut, this is the last possible piece that I could make.  I turned this on February 3, '11 and when it dried it had a great distorted shape! The wood was in the very early stages of decay so there is some beautiful natural wood color with an ample supply of off white/tan sapwood. The dimensions are 14.2" diameter by 2.5" height.  Although it is quite distorted, it does sit flat on a table.  The finish is pure Tung Oil only.  Rubbed numerous times, followed by sanding of the finish gives it a very smooth surface, partially due to the higher density of this wood.
