Here is a bowl with a mixture of burl and traditional
grain type wood. It also throws in quite a bit of bark interspersed between the two types of wood. It has that classic
maple finish of hard wood, very smooth and it conveys warmth. The dimensions are 11.5" diameter by 3.2" height,
making it an excellent bowl for use and display. I first turned this on April 18, '11. The finish is pure Tung
oil only. It has been hand rubbed with oil numerous times, sanded and now has a very smooth feel.

Spalted Maple Wood Bowl, No. m690
This a bowl that is spalted throughout. I first
turned this on March 23, '11 and it has a dimension of 14.5"diameter by 3.75" height. There is a flat
top edge about 1" in width with an area under it so that your hands can lift and carry it easily. As you can see
there is a dark streak that nearly crosses the bowl in the center. This is an old 'crack' that nature put inside,
since it is dark in color. The finish is pure Tung Oil, followed by numerous sprayings of spar urethane. This
bowl is very smooth to the touch and is both functional and decorative.

Spalted Maple Bowl, No. m716
I guess one can say this is a 'bowl'. Maybe it could
be classified as a wood item but regardless of what one calls it, it is quite busy in appearance. There is bark on its
side, distortion on the top, various grain colors possibly due to water and minerals getting into the wood as well as beauty
in its overall appeal. I turned this on June 5, '10 not knowing how it would dry because of some knots in its side.
It did ok and following sanding I decided it just needed a good oil rubbing with the pure Tung Oil. Great for many
uses as well as decoration. The dimensions are 6.4" diameter by 5" height.

Maple Burl Bowl, No. m713
Here is a highly spalted maple bowl with a very
busy appearance. The fungus that did the discoloration has permeated between many of the annual rings and along with
some beetles have put a few holes on the bowl surface. Nature at its best! I first turned this on September 10,
'10. Although I have plenty of maple wood to make bowls with, I have a hard time keeping them for very long. People
really like these and with it taking months to produce, I am trying to keep up with demand without it becoming an assembly
line. This one has a nice base to it, is a good thickness and is very smooth to the touch. There is a nice natural
black area along the top edge. The dimensions are 10.75" diameter by 4.5" in height. After sanding, I rubbed pure
Tung Oil onto the surface, resanded after drying and then sprayed on numerous coats of satin finish spar urethane. Excellent
for a salad for two or more as well as decorative.
