This is 'one heck of a bowl', as one would say where I
grew up ! First turned on August 11, '08, it is a very sturdy spalted bowl. It weighs 3.8 lbs, is 13.25" in diameter
and has a height of 5". Excellent for salads, fruit and of course decorative functions. There is a notch of wood,
about 0.25", missing on the top edge that occurred naturally as it dried. The three grooves undulate in the heartwood
area on the outside giving it a unique appearance.

Here is a classic spalted maple bowl. Spalting occurs
as the wood decays! However, this process lasts at least 1-2yrs and begins to occur while the tree is upright/living. When
cut down, the end of logs has a star like pattern in the cross-section. This particular bowl is very spalted but
very sturdy/strong, meaning that it is dense and not porous. It was first crafted on June 4,'08 and it tapers from 11.5' diameter
to 4.2" in its 5" depth. The finish is tung oil for developing the grain pattern, followed by a lacquer spray that
is sanded and polished. The feel is very smooth and this bowl would be great for salads and/or decoration.

This bowl, first turned on May 19,'07 is an example of
a spalted maple. This bowl is more unique in that it has a good size naturally formed hole in its side! The hole comes from
the decay of some heartwood. The finish is pure Tung oil with numerous sprayings of a clear matte enamel finish. There is
some distortion toward an oval shape. The dimensions are: 11.4"diameter x 4.75" height.

Here is an example of a ideal spalted maple bowl. Crafted
on June 7, '08, it is similar to maple bowl no. m191, above, but it has an edge at the top and it is slightly distorted at
the top. The taper is more rounded than the other bowl but it has the same base diameter of 4.5". The finish is
tung oil to preserve the wood and bring out its pattern and then it is sprayed with a spar urethane. Excellent for salads,
fruit or a decorative piece in your home.

Here is an extreme case of spalted maple. Spalting takes
place as the tree is decaying and if made into a bowl or a piece of furnitue before it decays too much you have a unique product.
Maple spalts the most frequently. This bowl was first turned on September 24, '07 and because it comes from the center portion
of the tree diameter, it was crafted with straight sides. The bowl has distorted to a slightly oval shape. It is currently
finished in pure Tung oil and could be finished with a clear glossy lacquer if you would want that. I left it this way because
this is such a beautiful natural looking bowl. The dimensions are approximately 10.5" diameter x 5" height.

This bowl is the combination of some of the ones
I have previously mentioned. It is a mixture of spalted and burl and was turned on Dec.2,'07. It is a darker brown color wood
with black markings throughout the irregular grain(burl) while on the outside there is some beautiful spalting. There is also
some black indentations in the bottom area of the bowl. The finish is pure Tung oil with a very smooth surface. I think it
looks excellent without a clear glossy finish, however if you would want that,I would not object. There is a small amount
of distortion on the top edge. The dimensions are: 11.75" diameter x 6" height.

This bowl, turned on June 17, '08 has beauty, form
and functionality. It is slightly flared out at the top, flat inside bottom, except where it curves into the sides, large
flat base, 9" with a top diameter of 12" one way and 11.5" the other. This indicates a slight distortion to the oval direction.
The depth of this bowl is essentially 5". The finish is tung oil, with numerous sprayings of a spar urethane to make
the bowl essentially waterproof. The finish is very smooth and there is a soft shine to it.

Here is a really nice spalted maple bowl. This bowl is
very suitable for everyday use for those salads or as a decorative piece. It was first turned on February 26, '08 and is slightly
distorted on the top but of course sits flat on a surface like all of my bowls. The dimensions are: 11.5" diameter
by 4.25" height. The base diameter is 6". The finish is pure Tung Oil, which of course is food approved.
