Black Locust (Robinia pseudoacaciaBowls:  has yellow colored wood that will turn pink/red after about a year!
Honey Locust (Gleditsia triacanthos):  Given this name from Native Americans who ate the leguminous seed pods that were sweet.

Black Locust Bowl, No., L699
Black Locust, natures 'treated' wood.  Most of the time, it is not a respected wood. Since it is resistant to decay, it was used as fence posts and other outdoor needs.  This tree has a shallow root system so during storms, they often succumb to nature's forces.  I obtained a rather long trunk(about 7') and decided to make some traditional bowls because I knew the wood would be unique. I sold 6 bowls from part of the trunk, so here is a new one from the original trunk. My favorite expression for Black Locust is: 'it is so ugly it's pretty'!  This bowl, first turned on April 19, '11 measures 9.5" diameter by 5" height and it has a few nicks and bruises from nature.  The finish is pure Tung Oil,  followed by numerous spayings of spar urethane to protect the wood.  Did you know that Black Locust wood is yellow and when exposed to light will turn a pinkish color! Now that's weird.

Black Locust Bowl, No., L612
This black locust sits on a slightly elevated base.  Most of the time the wood controls what I can do to make a bowl from it.  This one may have had some decay just below the bark and I had to remove more woody material so I may have decided to have a raised base.  I first turned this on September 27, '10 and once again this wood proved to be a one of a kind of material.  There is some nice distortion to the bowl and there is a black colored slice on the side.  This will not impede its use as a salad bowl, but it will add to its uniqueness.  The finish is pure tung oil, followed by numerous sprayings of spar urethane.  Recall that I mentioned above that it will turn a pinkish/red color once exposed more to the room air.  I store all of my finished bowls in boxes with each one wrapped separately so there isn't any chance of them seeing any light.  The dimensions are: 10.5" diameter by 4.5" height. Enjoy!

Honey Locust Bowl, No., hl714
A friend called me during the winter and said 'you will want some of this wood'.  Not seen very often, it was honey locust.  There wasn't very much and it was pretty small in diameter so I took a few pieces of trunk and some branched area, called crotch, and on March 24, '11, I turned this bowl.  Its dimensions are 9.4" diameter by 4.4" height.  What can I say about it: Its pretty, has a pinkish color, has some nice grain patterns and is unusual.  This particular piece is essentially all heartwood.  I would imagine it will become more pinkish with time as does its cousin, the black locust.  It has numerous hairline cracks throughout.  As I have mentioned before,  I store my finished bowls in a sealed plastice box, wrapped in cloth so the bowls do not see the light of day, except at vendor shows.  This bowl was finished with pure tung oil only.  Excellent shape  for fruit, decoration or your individual salad bowl.

Honey Locust Bowl, No., hl615
For those of you who prefer a near perfect bowl, this is one you may take a liking to! Other than having a small dark colored knot on the inside of the bowl, this bowl can provide a lifetime of use.  First turned on February 24, '11 it has that pinkish color, and uniform grain appearance.  The dimensions are 8.75" diameter by 3.75" height, and is finished with my traditonal process of pure tung oil followed by numerous sprayings of spar urethane.  Excellent for everday use as well as decoration.
