Betula lenta, known as sweet birch, black birch, spice birch, mahogany birch and cherry birch. is native to eastern North America from southern Maine to northern Georgia.

Black Birch Bowl, No., bb703
Black birch has that nice 'birch beer' aroma.  The story goes that someone wanted the coal miners in eastern Pennsylvania to stop drinking so much beer. So, some entrepreneur type individual made a drink from the roots of the birch tree and called it 'birch beer', aka rootbeer.
Anyway, here is a black birch bowl.  I do not find many birch trees and usually they are pretty small.  Therefore the bowls are going to be smaller.  This one, measuring 7.25" diameter by 3.5" height was first turned on April 4, '11.  It a bit unusual in that it has a hole thru the sides and part of the bottom !  Now why would someone want this bowl?  Because it is different, has character and can still hold larger items.  Yes, it does not have a lot of utility but it is a conversation piece.  So, if you want something unusual, try this one.  The finish is pure Tung Oil only.  Rubbed on numerous times, it is truly a natural product.
