Malus domestica is in the rose family and was first cultivated in western asia.  A search does not show any use of the wood, other than for smoking.  However, the bowls I form from apple wood are excellent in color, can be highly distorted and since apple trees are pruned, the bowl often has many knots and waves in the grain.

Apple Wood Bowl, No. a509                                                        .
The shape of this bowl was quite difficult to turn. The style of turning is known as end grain work.  Instead of using your cutting tools to remove wood fibers along its length, you remove the wood fibers as if you are viewing them from their ends.  I first turned this on April 22, '10 and when you cannot find very much apple wood to turn, you turn every possible piece that you can from what you do have.  This bowl is somewhat distorted, has some bark on the top edge and is fairly heavy.  As for its function, I will leave that up to the buyer.  In all my efforts to sand this bowl on the inside, I was unable to remove all of the tool marks that can be seen.  The finish is pure tung oil, followed by numerous sprayings of spar urethane to protect the wood.  The dimensions are 7.25" diameter by 6.25" height.
