Spalted Maple Bowl, No. m492
You cannot always find spalted maple that is acceptable
for bowls. Sometimes the wood is too decayed, other times it doesn't have any spalting. But a few months ago I needed
some because most of my bowls with this characteristic had been sold. So, this is my first showing of some new ones.
I like and try to make large bowls because of the challenge. This one fits the bill! It measures 12.75" diameter by 5.5"height. If you are wondering
about the bright light on the bowl, it is natural light, which I only use. I have a skylight in my office where I photograph
and it was a beautiful day. There isn't any blemishes in the shaded area. This bowl was rubbed with pure tung oil, resanded,
reoiled and sprayed with numerous layers of spar urethane. Ideal for many uses.

This is an excellent hard maple bowl. No decay,
just clean good lookingl maple. It has had considerable viewing. I first turned this on November 1, '08 !
I probably offered it for sale during the late summer of '09. A friend at a show has a dress store in Old Greenwich,
CT and wanted me to lend it to her so she could decorate her store. I gave her this one and a few others and forgot about
them. This winter she called me and said she was rearranging her store and that she didn't need them anymore. So, now
I am offering it for sale. It is in impeccable condition, the finish certainly durable and there isn't a mark on it.
The dimensions are 12.5" diameter by 4" height. The finish is pure Tung Oil followed by spraying with spar urethane
for that waterproof protection. There is some distortion along the top edge giving it an oval like shape.

Spalted Maple Bowl, No. m584
I like the appearance of a flat top edge on a bowl.
I think it adds a dimension not seen in your standard bowl. This highly spalted maple bowl has a natural open 'slice'
that goes completely through the bowl. It is near the bottom but on the side and can be seen in the photo. In
a pinch, this bowl could be used to drain liquid from a food! I first turned this on September 2, '10 and must say it
is quite colorful. The finish is pure Tung Oil, followed by numerous spraying of spar urethane. The dimensions
are 13.75" diameter by 3.7" height. This bowl is both functional and decorative.

Now I am sure you are wondering, 'who would want
a bowl with a large hole in it'? Many people look for the unusual because they have the traditional and want something
more unique. This is a very nice bowl with a good size hole in the side to bottom. I didn't plan this so blame
it on nature, if you care to. I first turned this on May 18,'11 and I describe it as 'knarly with hole on side,
bark all about with a flat inside bottom. The dimensions are 7.5" diameter by 4.25" height. The finish
is pure Tung oil only.

Here is another maple bowl with a hole in it!
All done by nature. There is a moderate amount of bark dispersed throughout the wood, making it appear as if it
was a burl. It has a funnel shape to it and I first turned in on March 6, '11. The dimensions are 7.75"
diameter by 3.25" height. The finish is pure Tung Oil.

Here is a more unusual bowl. It has a hole in the
bottom! Previously when I had a bowl with a hole in it, I would set it aside and just let it accumulate sawdust.
However, after a year or so selling my bowls at craft shows, people would ask whether I made any with holes in them.
Pretty soon I was finishing the ones I had and just like that they were purchased. I do not intentionally craft a bowl
from a piece of wood with a hole in it. Most of the time when you are turning it, you discover that there was a branch
that was cut off years earlier and it decayed a way in to the wood. Such was the case for this bowl. I turned
this on February 19, '10 and found this nice natural decay of a branch that ended up in the bottom at an angle. This
bowl still has many uses but what I have observed is that people like things out of the ordinary. This bowl measures 10.4"
diameter by 5" height, has lots of spalting activity and has an ultra smooth finish of spar urethane over pure tung oil.
